Twin Ports Power 5: Retirement? I’m too young for that

Sometimes it’s odd when life reminds you how old you are in an unexpected way. A couple weeks ago, I got a message from my friend Rick Ray that he was going to retire from coaching girls basketball in Two Harbors. Rick’s been the junior varsity coach, statistician and varsity assistant for the Agate girls for 41 years — meaning I was seven when he started. Still, when I did the math and thought about how long I’ve been involved in local sports — particularly in Lake County — I realized I witnessed more than a quarter of Rick’s career. Читать дальше...

Sherlock, Grand Rapids shut down Rock Ridge for section title

DULUTH — With 9 minutes gone in the first period, Rock Ridge senior Caz Carlson slid the puck past Grand Rapids goalie Luke Sherlock and gave the Wolverines a one-goal lead in the Section 7AA final Thursday at Amsoil Arena. The goal was notable because it was the first goal Sherlock, a sophomore, had given up in the section tournament, but he wasn’t worried. “I was just thinking the boys are just gonna bounce back from it,” he said. “I trusted them — I knew we were going to win that game from the... Duluth swimmer Joey Zelen ready to make his ‘own stories’

DULUTH — It’s not exactly easy to stand out in a family full of elite swimmers, but Duluth’s Joey Zelen is finding a way. His parents both swam at North Dakota, as did oldest brother Tyler, until the program was cut after his sophomore year. Tyler transferred to Wisconsin and ultimately brother Ryan followed him there. The boys all have slightly different specialities in the pool, but they all have one event in common. “In our family, whoever has the fastest 50 freestyle time is a big achievement,” Will Zelen, the youngest of the family, said. Jarrid Houston column: Minnesota inland water closed for walleye, pike

As the dust settles on another sports show season, we again would love to thank everyone that stopped down to say hi. February is always such a busy time with back-to-back shows in La Crosse, Wisconsin, and Duluth. We can now call the Minnesota general inland sport fishing season "closed." We are finishing up our guide trips these next two weeks, then we will be somewhat closed ourselves, as we prepare for open water. Until then, there's more winter and ice-fishing opportunities on inland waters for fun panfish bites... Читать дальше...

Senior Night 2026 may not be what some Bulldogs originally pictured

DULUTH — For Minnesota Duluth senior forwards Kyle Gaffney and Scout Truman, the Senior Night they will experience with the Bulldogs on Saturday at Amsoil Arena is not the one they probably pictured in their minds the previous three seasons. That’s because both began their college careers elsewhere before transferring to UMD prior to the 2025-26 season. Truman played three seasons at UMass Lowell before becoming a Bulldog, and Gaffney spent three seasons in Fairbanks with Alaska. That doesn’t change their excitement as the No. Читать дальше...

MLB analyst has big expectations for Nationals' Cade Cavalli in 2026

Cade Cavalli made a name for himself as a high school baseball player in Oklahoma. He was dominant in his junior year, thankfully, because he would miss the majority of his senior year due to a back injury. During the 2017 MLB Draft, the Atlanta Braves selected him in the 29th round, but he did not sign and instead went to play college baseball for the University of Oklahoma. Cavalli would go on to...
