MLB news roundup

Welcome to another new week, AN!

The A’s dropped their series opener against the division-rival Houston Astros yesterday, getting pummeled 9-2 in an embarrassing loss. The Astros have struggled this year to a 16-25 record and could end up being sellers if they don’t start turning things around, possibly putting Star third baseman Alex Bregman on the trade block. The A’s would love to see that but losing against them only gives them hope of a possible comeback. Читать дальше...

Electric Vehicles Lose Market Share in the U.S. as Sales Decline

Hybrid vehicles, plug-in hybrid electric vehicles, and battery electric vehicles made up 18% of all new light-duty vehicle sales in the first quarter of 2024, down from an 18.8% share in the fourth quarter of 2023. Battery electric vehicle (BEV) sales fell for the first time since the onset of Covid in 2020, the Energy Information Administration (EIA) said on Tuesday, citing estimates from Wards Intelligence. This slight decline in the EV market share was driven primarily by a drop in BEV sales,... Читать дальше...

Lack of the IFN-γ signal leads to lethal Orientia tsutsugamushi infection in mice with skin eschar lesions

by Yuejin Liang, Hui Wang, Keer Sun, Jiaren Sun, Lynn Soong

Scrub typhus is an acute febrile disease due to Orientia tsutsugamushi (Ot) infection and can be life-threatening with organ failure, hemorrhage, and fatality. Yet, little is known as to how the host reacts to Ot bacteria at early stages of infection; no reports have addressed the functional roles of type I versus type II interferon (IFN) responses in scrub typhus. In this study, we used comprehensive intradermal (i.d.) inoculation... Читать дальше...

Height & income: Labor returns of health in Mexico from 2000 to 2018

by Juan Pablo Gutiérrez, Stefano M. Bertozzi

Investment in health has been proposed as a mechanism to promote upward social mobility. Previous analyses have reported inconsistent estimates of the returns to investment in health in Mexico based on different models for different years. We aim to estimate returns for Mexico using data from four time points Adult height and labor income are drawn from the periodical national health and nutrition surveys–a group of relatively standardized surveys—that... Optimization of 3D printing supply chain in the era of live streaming e-commerce

by Zhen Chen, Ying Tang

This study examines the effects of the rising live streaming e-commerce on the 3DP supply chain, employing system dynamics to develop separate models for pure polymer and polymer-metal mixed printing. The analysis focuses on optimizing the 3DP supply chain configuration. Results indicate that, based solely on printing time, cost, and quality metrics, Corporate-live-3DP services are optimal for live commerce scenarios. However, despite this, Private-live-3DP maintains a substantial consumer base in practice... Читать дальше...

Lgr6-expressing functional nail stem-like cells differentiated from human-induced pluripotent stem cells

by Yukino Inomata, Nano Kawatani, Hiromi Yamashita, Fumiyuki Hattori

The nail matrix containing stem cell populations produces nails and may contribute to fingertip regeneration. Nails are important tissues that maintain the functions of the hand and foot for handling objects and locomotion. Tumor chemotherapy impairs nail growth and, in many cases, loses them, although not permanently. In this report, we have achieved the successful differentiation of nail stem (NS)-like cells from human-induced... Читать дальше...

A case-matched study of imatinib mesylate between different formulations on plasma trough concentration, adverse events, quality of life and outcomes in gastrointestinal stromal tumor patients

by Li Zeng, Xiang Cheng, Juan Li, Jun Zhang, Xingye Wu

Genike, the imatinib (IM)-alpha form is widely used in the treatment of gastrointestinal stromal tumor (GIST) patients in China. We wanted to investigate whether there are differences in IM plasma concentrations, adverse events, health-related quality of life (QOL) and outcomes between patients treated with Genike and Glivec. Thirty included GIST patients receiving IM treatment were matched to either Genike or Glivec according to gastrectomy, body weight, body surface area and sex. Читать дальше...

Access to healthcare among transgender and non-binary youth in Sweden and Spain: A qualitative analysis and comparison

by María del Mar Pastor Bravo, Ida Linander

Background

Transgender and non-binary (TGNB) people tend to report worse health than cis people, however, despite an increased need for care, they face several barriers when trying to access healthcare. These barriers might be exacerbated when young age intersects with a trans identity, and so there is a need for studies highlighting the experiences of TGNB youth.

Aims

To explore and compare how TGNB youth (15–26 years old) in Sweden and Spain experienced their access to healthcare... Читать дальше...

Accuracy of artificial intelligence-assisted endoscopy in the diagnosis of gastric intestinal metaplasia: A systematic review and meta-analysis

by Na Li, Jian Yang, Xiaodong Li, Yanting Shi, Kunhong Wang

Background and aims

Gastric intestinal metaplasia is a precancerous disease, and a timely diagnosis is essential to delay or halt cancer progression. Artificial intelligence (AI) has found widespread application in the field of disease diagnosis. This study aimed to conduct a comprehensive evaluation of AI’s diagnostic accuracy in detecting gastric intestinal metaplasia in endoscopy, compare it to endoscopists’ ability, and explore the main factors affecting AI’s performance.
