Viral load non-suppression status among women exposed to Dolutegravir-based versus Efavirenz-based regimens in Ethiopia: A before-and-after study

by Wolde Facha, Takele Tadesse, Eskinder Wolka, Ayalew Astatkie

Background

High viral load during pregnancy and breastfeeding period is the risk factor for vertical transmission of human immunodeficiency virus (HIV). Currently, Dolutegravir (DTG)-based regimens are recommended to attain adequate viral load suppression (VLS) among women. However, its effect on VLS has not been investigated among women in PMTCT care in Ethiopia.

Objective

This study aimed to investigate the rate of... Читать дальше...

Early environments and exploration in the preschool years

by Ilona Bass, Elizabeth Bonawitz

A great deal of research has demonstrated how children’s exploration is driven by opportunities for learning. However, less work has investigated how individual differences across children and their environmental contexts relate to patterns in playful exploration. We performed a “mega-analysis” in which we pooled preschool-aged children’s play data from four past experiments in our lab (N = 278; M(age) = 56 months) and correlated play behaviors with age and socioeconomic status (median income... Vaccine efficacy induced by virus-like particles containing Leishmania donovani surface glycoprotein GP63

by Keon-Woong Yoon, Ki Back Chu, Gi-Deok Eom, Jie Mao, Fu-Shi Quan

Leishmania donovani surface glycoprotein 63 (GP63) is a major virulence factor involved in parasite escape and immune evasion. In this study, we generated virus-like particles (VLPs) expressing L. donovani GP63 using the baculovirus expression system. Mice were intramuscularly immunized with GP63-VLPs and challenged with L. donovani promastigotes. GP63-VLP immunization elicited higher levels of L. donovani antigen-specific serum antibodies and enhanced splenic B cell... Читать дальше...

Reliable ligand discrimination in stochastic multistep kinetic proofreading: First passage time vs. product counting strategies

by Xiangting Li, Tom Chou

Cellular signaling, crucial for biological processes like immune response and homeostasis, relies on specificity and fidelity in signal transduction to accurately respond to stimuli amidst biological noise. Kinetic proofreading (KPR) is a key mechanism enhancing signaling specificity through time-delayed steps, although its effectiveness is debated due to intrinsic noise potentially reducing signal fidelity. In this study, we reformulate the theory of kinetic proofreading... Читать дальше...

Zero-shot denoising of microscopy images recorded at high-resolution limits

by Sebastian Salwig, Jakob Drefs, Jörg Lücke

Conventional and electron microscopy visualize structures in the micrometer to nanometer range, and such visualizations contribute decisively to our understanding of biological processes. Due to different factors in recording processes, microscopy images are subject to noise. Especially at their respective resolution limits, a high degree of noise can negatively effect both image interpretation by experts and further automated processing. However... Читать дальше...

Older adults select different but not simpler strategies than younger adults in risky choice

by Florian Bolenz, Thorsten Pachur

Younger and older adults often differ in their risky choices. Theoretical frameworks on human aging point to various cognitive and motivational factors that might underlie these differences. Using a novel computational model based on the framework of resource rationality, we find that the two age groups rely on different strategies. Importantly, older adults did not use simpler strategies than younger adults, they did not select among fewer strategies, they did not make more errors... Читать дальше...

Infection patterns in simple and complex contagion processes on networks

by Diego Andrés Contreras, Giulia Cencetti, Alain Barrat

Contagion processes, representing the spread of infectious diseases, information, or social behaviors, are often schematized as taking place on networks, which encode for instance the interactions between individuals. The impact of the network structure on spreading process has been widely investigated, but not the reverse question: do different processes unfolding on a given network lead to different infection patterns? How do the... Читать дальше...

For pet’s sake: Discovering a naturally occurring zebrafish virus

by Mollie Virgo, Brian Thomas Ho, Serge Mostowy

Zebrafish are often used to model host-pathogen interactions, but few models of natural virus infection have been established. A new study in PLOS Biology shows that metatranscriptomics and cohousing experiments can uncover a natural pathogenic virus of zebrafish for laboratory study. Zebrafish are often used to model host-pathogen interactions, but few models of natural virus infection have been established. This Primer explores a new study... Читать дальше...

Now is the time for conservationists to stand up for social justice

by E. J. Milner-Gulland

Existing power imbalances and injustices could be exacerbated by large flows of international funding for nature recovery. Conservationists are still grappling with what social justice means in practice; a major shift in mindset is required. Conservationists are still grappling with what social justice means in practice. This Perspective argues that a major shift in mindset is required in order to achieve socially just, rights-based conservation, and that shift needs to happen now.

Costs in conservation: Common costly mistakes and how to avoid them

by Vanessa M. Adams

There has been an increasingly prevalent message that data regarding costs must be included in conservation planning activities to make cost-efficient decisions. Despite the growing acceptance that socioeconomic context is critical to conservation success, the approaches to embedded economic and financial considerations into planning have not significantly evolved. Inappropriate cost data is frequently included in decisions, with the potential of compromising biodiversity and social outcomes. Читать дальше...
