Human coronavirus NL63 nsp1 induces degradation of RNA polymerase II to inhibit host protein synthesis

by Kala Hardy, Michael Lutz, Toru Takimoto

Coronavirus (CoV) nonstructural protein 1 (nsp1) is considered a pathogenic factor due to its ability to inhibit host antiviral responses by inducing general shutoff of host protein synthesis. Nsp1 is expressed by α- and β-CoVs, but its functions and strategies to induce host shutoff are not fully elucidated. We compared the nsp1s from two β-CoVs (SARS-CoV and SARS-CoV-2) and two α-CoVs (NL63 and 229E) and found that NL63 nsp1 has the strongest shutoff activity. Читать дальше...

An evolutionary game-theoretic analysis of the "multi-agent co-governance" system of unfair competition on internet platforms

by Zhen Xu, Shudan Zheng

The increasingly prominent issue of unfair competition on Internet platforms (IPUC) severely restricts the healthy and sustainable development of the platform economy. Based on the IPUC "multi-agent co-governance" scenario, this paper introduces stochastic disturbances and continuous strategy set to improve the classical binary deterministic evolutionary game system. The results show that after considering stochastic disturbances, the positive state corresponding... Читать дальше...

Can trade and security alliance help reduce interstate war?

by Seung-Whan Choi

This study explains how the gap between theory and empirical research hinders scientific progress in the area of international political economy. To demonstrate this point, I use Chen’s Extended Dependence Theory, which challenges liberal peace theory but fails to provide supporting empirical evidence. Chen contends that it is not trade dependence between two states that fosters peace but a challenger’s trade relations with the defense-pact partners of the target. Although... Читать дальше...

Bubble reachers and uncivil discourse in polarized online public sphere

by Jordan K. Kobellarz, Milos Brocic, Daniel Silver, Thiago H. Silva

Early optimism saw possibilities for social media to renew democratic discourse, marked by hopes for individuals from diverse backgrounds to find opportunities to learn from and interact with others different from themselves. This optimism quickly waned as social media seemed to breed ideological homophily marked by “filter bubbles” or “echo chambers.” A typical response to the sense of fragmentation has been to encourage... Do the unusual resignations of independent directors affect auditors’ professional judgment?

by Li Zhang, Zigui Li

In Kangmei’s first trial judgment, where the independent directors faced significant joint and several liabilities, it triggered a "wave" of resignations among independent directors of listed companies. Auditors auditing financial reports of these companies might consider this a significant signal, raising the question: does this signal influence their professional judgment? The study examines the relationship between the resignation of independent directors and auditors’... Читать дальше...

Integrate-and-fire-type models of the lateral superior olive

by Go Ashida, Tiezhi Wang, Jutta Kretzberg

Neurons of the lateral superior olive (LSO) in the auditory brainstem play a fundamental role in binaural sound localization. Previous theoretical studies developed various types of neuronal models to study the physiological functions of the LSO. These models were usually tuned to a small set of physiological data with specific aims in mind. Therefore, it is unclear whether and how they can be related to each other, how widely applicable they are, and which model is suitable for what purposes. Читать дальше...

Nameability effects and short-term memory limitations on order perception and enumeration of brief sounds

by Anna-Maria Psarompa, Fotios Fotiadis, Argiro Vatakis

Research has shown that perceiving the order of successive auditory stimuli could be affected by their nameability. The present research re-examined this hypothesis, using tasks requiring participants to report the order of successively presented (with no interstimulus gaps) environmental (i.e., easily named stimuli) and abstract (i.e., hard-to-name stimuli) sounds of short duration (i.e., 200 ms). Using the same sequences, we also examined... Читать дальше...
