Using a spatial autoregressive model with spatial autoregressive disturbances to investigate origin-destination trip flows

by Linglin Ni, Dapeng Zhang

Spatial interaction models with spatial origin-destination (OD) filters are powerful tools to characterize trip flows in space, which is a classic and important problem in regional science. To the authors’ knowledge, existing studies adopting OD filters mostly specify the spatial dependence as an autoregressive process, which may not be the full picture of spatial effects. To examine the problem, this paper proposes the hypotheses that 1) spatial OD dependences... Читать дальше...

Understory plants evade shading in a temperate deciduous forest amid climate variability by shifting phenology in synchrony with canopy trees

by Carol K. Augspurger, Carl F. Salk

Global warming is leading understory and canopy plant communities of temperate deciduous forests to grow leaves earlier in spring and drop them later in autumn. If understory species extend their leafy seasons less than canopy trees, they will intercept less light. We look for mismatched phenological shifts between canopy and understory in 28 years (1995–2022) of weekly data from Trelease Woods, Urbana, IL, USA. The observations cover 31 herb species of contrasting seasonality (for 1995–2017)... Читать дальше...

Impacts of Long COVID on workers: A longitudinal study of employment exit, work hours and mental health in the UK

by Darja Reuschke, Donald Houston, Paul Sissons

Background

The COVID-19 pandemic has had enormous implications for the world of work. However, there has been relatively little focus on the employment and workforce challenges of the virus in relation to workforce health, beyond the immediate management of the spread of the disease. There is an important gap in understanding the ongoing workforce issues created by the significant incidence of Long COVID in the population.

Optimization of “vehicle-UAV” joint distribution routing for cold chain logistics considering risk of epidemic spreading and green cost

by Gang Liu, Qian Liu, Hao Guo, Ming Xiang, Jinyan Sang

To address the epidemic, such as COVID-19, the government may implement the home quarantine policy for the infected residents. The logistics company is required to control the risk of epidemic spreading while delivering goods to residents. In this case, the logistics company often uses vehicles and unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) for delivery. This paper studies the distribution issue of cold chain logistics by integrating UAV logistics with epidemic risk management innovatively. Читать дальше...

A new hybrid machine learning model for predicting the renewal life of patents

by Ashit Kumar, Pritam Ranjan, Arnab Koley, Shadab Danish

In almost every country, patents need to be renewed multiple times after they are granted. A patentee assesses the value of the patent and then pays a renewal fee to keep it active for another stipulated period. The factors that characterize the value of a patent is subjective. This paper aims to address the research gap of building an accurate model for predicting the renewal life (often considered as a substitute for the patent value) of Indian patents... Possible mechanisms to improve sleep spindles via closed loop stimulation during slow wave sleep: A computational study

by Muhammad Mushtaq, Lisa Marshall, Rizwan ul Haq, Thomas Martinetz

Sleep spindles are one of the prominent EEG oscillatory rhythms of non-rapid eye movement sleep. In the memory consolidation, these oscillations have an important role in the processes of long-term potentiation and synaptic plasticity. Moreover, the activity (spindle density and/or sigma power) of spindles has a linear association with learning performance in different paradigms. According to the experimental observations...
