Modeling soybean growth: A mixed model approach

by Maud Delattre, Yusuke Toda, Jessica Tressou, Hiroyoshi Iwata

The evaluation of plant and animal growth, separately for genetic and environmental effects, is necessary for genetic understanding and genetic improvement of environmental responses of plants and animals. We propose to extend an existing approach that combines nonlinear mixed-effects model (NLMEM) and the stochastic approximation of the Expectation-Maximization algorithm (SAEM) to analyze genetic and environmental effects on plant growth. Parameter estimation in a whole-brain network model of epilepsy: Comparison of parallel global optimization solvers

by David R. Penas, Meysam Hashemi, Viktor K. Jirsa, Julio R. Banga

The Virtual Epileptic Patient (VEP) refers to a computer-based representation of a patient with epilepsy that combines personalized anatomical data with dynamical models of abnormal brain activities. It is capable of generating spatio-temporal seizure patterns that resemble those recorded with invasive methods such as stereoelectro EEG data, allowing for the evaluation of clinical hypotheses before planning surgery. This study... Читать дальше...

An integrative approach to protein sequence design through multiobjective optimization

by Lu Hong, Tanja Kortemme

With recent methodological advances in the field of computational protein design, in particular those based on deep learning, there is an increasing need for frameworks that allow for coherent, direct integration of different models and objective functions into the generative design process. Here we demonstrate how evolutionary multiobjective optimization techniques can be adapted to provide such an approach. With the established Non-dominated Sorting Genetic Algorithm... Role of diffusion and reaction of the constituents in spreading of histone modification marks

by Vinoth Manivannan, Mandar M. Inamdar, Ranjith Padinhateeri

Cells switch genes ON or OFF by altering the state of chromatin via histone modifications at specific regulatory locations along the chromatin polymer. These gene regulation processes are carried out by a network of reactions in which the histone marks spread to neighboring regions with the help of enzymes. In the literature, this spreading has been studied as a purely kinetic, non-diffusive process considering the interactions between neighboring nucleosomes. Читать дальше...

Reinforcement learning of altruistic punishment differs between cultures and across the lifespan

by Ziyan Guo, Jialu Yu, Wenxin Wang, Patricia Lockwood, Zhen Wu

Altruistic punishment is key to establishing cooperation and maintaining social order, yet its developmental trends across cultures remain unclear. Using computational reinforcement learning models, we provided the first evidence of how social feedback dynamically influences group-biased altruistic punishment across cultures and the lifespan. Study 1 (n = 371) found that Chinese participants exhibited higher learning rates than... Читать дальше...

Corujeira 113 Renovation / Impare Arquitectura

The work on the old Porto Industrial Slaughterhouse, a project by Japanese architect Kengo Kuma, and the redevelopment planned for Praça da Corujeira are examples of the transformation of the city of Porto. In the near future, the eastern part of the city can respond to the current needs of a contemporary city, with qualified spaces and facilities linked to an efficient public transport network.
