How bacteria attach their cloaks of invisibility to immune defenses

Bacteria have different strategies for protecting themselves. Some bacterial pathogens surround themselves with a shell made of many sugar chains that lie close together, also known as capsular polymers. This protects the bacteria from drying out and physical stress. In addition, the capsule makes the pathogens invisible to our body's own defenses, so to speak, and helps them to survive in the body.

Heavy rain in northern Vermont leads to washed out roads and rescues

Heavy rain has washed out some roads and led to about two dozen rescues in northern Vermont, nearly three weeks after many farmers and residents in the state were hit by flooding from the remnants of Hurricane Beryl. Dual-action therapy shows promise against aggressive oral cancer

In a new study, scientists at Shanghai Jiaotong University School of Medicine found a promising new way to treat a type of oral cancer known as oral squamous cell carcinoma. The method specifically targets the cancer cells through a combination of nitric oxide gas therapy and nanocatalytic therapy, killing them more effectively and with fewer side effects. The study was published in Science and Technology of Advanced Materials.
