NASA's ICON mission ends with critical breakthroughs on Earth, space weather

Washington DC (UPI) Jul 24, 2024 - Nearly five years after it launched, NASA's Ionospheric Connection Explorer -- or ICON -- mission has officially come to an end, the space agency announced Wednesday.

NASA's ICON mission gathered valuable data as it orbited the outermost layer of Earth's atmosphere, about 55 miles to 360 miles into space in the ionosphere, and provided critical breakthroughs on how space weather affects Earth's weather.

Apple agrees to abide by White House AI safeguards

San Francisco (AFP) July 26, 2024 - The White House on Friday said that Apple has joined more than a dozen tech firms committed to following safeguards intended to curb the risks of artificial intelligence.

China reports 7 more deaths from torrential rains brought by tropical storm

Torrential rains have left at least seven people dead and three others missing in southeastern China, state media said on Tuesday, raising the death toll from a tropical storm to 22. All the deaths have been in Hunan province. Heavy rains have been falling on eastern Hunan for days as Tropical Storm Gaemi moved inland after making landfall at typhoon strength in neighbouring Fujian province on the Chinese coast.
