In silico analyses identify sequence contamination thresholds for Nanopore-generated SARS-CoV-2 sequences

by Ayooluwa J. Bolaji, Ana T. Duggan

The SARS-CoV-2 pandemic has brought molecular biology and genomic sequencing into the public consciousness and lexicon. With an emphasis on rapid turnaround, genomic data informed both diagnostic and surveillance decisions for the current pandemic at a previously unheard-of scale. The surge in the submission of genomic data to publicly available databases proved essential as comparing different genome sequences offers a wealth of knowledge, including phylogenetic links... The rules of multiplayer cooperation in networks of communities

by Diogo L. Pires, Mark Broom

Community organisation permeates both social and biological complex systems. To study its interplay with behaviour emergence, we model mobile structured populations with multiplayer interactions. We derive general analytical methods for evolutionary dynamics under high home fidelity when populations self-organise into networks of asymptotically isolated communities. In this limit, community organisation dominates over the network structure and emerging behaviour is independent of network topology. Читать дальше...

Elephant Rumblings: A’s and Giants split final, emotional Bay Bridge Series

Robert Edwards-USA TODAY Sports

MLB news roundup

Happy Monday, Athletics Nation!

The A’s and Giants played what appears to have been the final Bay Bridge Series this weekend, and it was certainly one to remember. Oakland got excellent starting pitching in both games: Osvaldo Bido carried a no-hitter into the sixth in Saturday’s victory, while JP Sears shone yet again on Sunday, pitching into the eighth inning and holding the Giants to a single run.

Sunday’s game was... Читать дальше...

Niger Aims to Become Major Oil Exporter

Niger has resumed oil exports after it reached an agreement with neighboring Benin following a recent border dispute. Niger stopped crude shipments in June after the West African nation closed a pipeline operated by China National Petroleum Corp. that links the Agadem oil field to the Sèmè Kpodji terminal in Benin. "We've reached an agreement. Loading of crude started this morning," Benin Energy Minister Samou Adambi told reporters on Monday, with Prime Minister Ali Lamine Zeine's office confirming the resumption of shipments. Exploring the spatial spillover effects of Yangtze River Delta ports on urban economic growth

by Jian Hou, Juming Shi, Liangyu Chen, Zhouping Zhang, Edwin Kuang

The Yangtze River Delta (YRD) ports are pivotal in shaping the Yangtze River Economic Belt and advancing urban economies across China. This article utilizes panel data from 20 cities with ports in the YRD area, spanning from 2011 to 2020, using the spatial Durbin model to explore how these ports influence urban economic growth. The findings indicate that: (1) The YRD ports significantly contribute to economic growth in both the port cities and their surrounding areas... Читать дальше...

Emergent coordination in temporal partitioning congestion games

by Reuven Cohen, Oren Perez

In this article we study the social dynamic of temporal partitioning congestion games (TPGs), in which participants must coordinate an optimal time-partitioning for using a limited resource. The challenge in TPGs lies in determining whether users can optimally self-organize their usage patterns. Reaching an optimal solution may be undermined, however, by a collectively destructive meta-reasoning pattern, trapping users in a socially vicious oscillatory behavior. Читать дальше...

Optimal truss design with MOHO: A multi-objective optimization perspective

by Nikunj Mashru, Ghanshyam G. Tejani, Pinank Patel, Mohammad Khishe

This research article presents the Multi-Objective Hippopotamus Optimizer (MOHO), a unique approach that excels in tackling complex structural optimization problems. The Hippopotamus Optimizer (HO) is a novel approach in meta-heuristic methodology that draws inspiration from the natural behaviour of hippos. The HO is built upon a trinary-phase model that incorporates mathematical representations of crucial aspects of Hippo’s behaviour... Читать дальше...
