California voters pass initiative to make some shoplifting and drug offenses felonies

California voters have approved a plan to borrow $10 billion for various climate programs. It will be the state’s largest investment to date in fighting climate change. It was among 10 statewide propositions on the state ballot Tuesday. Voters also approved an initiative making shoplifting a felony for repeat offenders again and increasing penalties for some drug charges. Brain stars hold our memories

A new study changes the way we understand memory. Until now, memories have been explained by the activity of brain cells called neurons that respond to learning events and control memory recall. Neurologists have now expanded this theory by showing that non-neuronal cell types in the brain called astrocytes -- star-shaped cells -- also store memories and work in concert with groups of neurons called engrams to regulate storage and retrieval of memories.

Swiss "burka ban" goes into effect with $1,000 fines for face coverings in 2025

No face coverings please, we're Swiss.

Back in 2021, 51.2% of Swiss voters backed a so called "anti-burka" law, which forbids people from covering their faces in public. The law will go into effect on January 1, 2025. Violators will have to pay a fine of up to CHF1,000 (about $1,143). — Read the rest
