How do medical students deal with the topic of racism? A qualitative analysis of group discussions in Germany

by Simon Matteo Gerhards, Mark Schweda

Background

Anti-racism is part of the medical professional ethos. Nevertheless, racism pervades medicine on individual, institutional, and structural levels. The concept of habitus helps to understand deficiencies in enacting anti-racism in practice. We use a habitus-based framework to analyse how medical students in Germany deal with the topic of racism. The research questions are: What are medical students’ understandings of racism? How do they deal with the topic in discussions? Читать дальше...

Concurrent validity of novel smartphone-based apps monitoring barbell velocity in powerlifting exercises

by Alexander Renner, Benedikt Mitter, Arnold Baca

The aim of this study was to determine the validity of three smartphone applications measuring barbell movement velocity in resistance training and comparing them to a commercially available linear transducer. Twenty competitive powerlifters (14 male and 6 female) completed a progressive loading protocol in the squat, bench press and deadlift (sumo or conventional) until reaching 90% of the highest load they had achieved in a recent competition. Corneal steep island formation after primary pterygium surgery

by Dong Hee Ha, Kyoung Woo Kim

Aims

This study aimed to report corneal steep island (CSI) formation following primary pterygium surgery and to identify preoperative pterygium morphological features that predict the likelihood of CSI.

Methods

A total of 93 eyes from 84 subjects with primary nasal pterygium, who underwent pterygium excision combined with conjunctival-limbal autograft, were included in this retrospective longitudinal cohort study. CSI was defined using anterior segment... Читать дальше...

Evaluation of the antitrypanosomal activity, cytotoxicity and phytochemistry of red Brazilian propolis

by Samyah Alanazi, Naif D. Alenzi

Recently, the growth in the consumption of functional foods with potential nutritional and health benefits revealed rapid progress in phytochemical analysis to assure quality and profile the chemical composition. Bee propolis, a gummy exudate produced in beehives after harvesting from different plant species and showed to contain bioactive secondary metabolites with biological importance. The main goal of the current study is to profile the chemical composition... Читать дальше...

Landfill leachate: An invisible threat to soil quality of temperate Himalayas

by Shayesta Islam, Haleema Bano, Asif Aziz Malik, Fahad Alotaibi

Landfills are the most affordable and popular method for managing waste in many parts of the world, However, in most developing nations, including India, the infiltration of hazardous materials from improperly managed dumping site continues to be a significant environmental problem. Around the world, leachate is a significant point source of contamination in numerous environmental media, including soil, groundwater, and surface water. Читать дальше...

Computational investigation of missense somatic mutations in cancer and potential links to pH-dependence and proteostasis

by Shalaw Sallah, Jim Warwicker

Metabolic changes during tumour development lead to acidification of the extracellular environment and a smaller increase of intracellular pH. Searches for somatic missense mutations that could reveal adaptation to altered pH have focussed on arginine to histidine changes, part of a general arginine depletion that originates from DNA mutational mechanisms. Analysis of mutations to histidine, potentially a simple route to the introduction of pH-sensing, shows... Читать дальше...

Method for detection of cerebral blood flow in neurointensive care using longitudinal arterial spin labeling MRI

by Sofie Tapper, Anders Tisell, Jan Hillman, Karin Wårdell

Cerebral blood flow (CBF) is carefully monitored in the Neurointensive Care Unit (NICU) to prevent secondary brain insults in patients who have suffered subarachnoid hemorrhage. Including absolute MRI measurements of CBF in the NICU monitoring protocol could add valuable information and potentially improve patient outcomes. This is particularly feasible at Linköping University Hospital, which uniquely has an MRI scanner located in the NICU... Читать дальше...

Zinc utilisation, trends, and predictors among under-five children with diarrhoea in Ethiopia: A pooled analysis

by Girma Beressa

Zinc has a significant benefit in saving children’s lives. It decreases severity, diarrhoeal duration, and death rates. However, evidence on zinc utilisation, trends, and predictors among under-five children with diarrhoea in Ethiopia was sparse and inconclusive. This study aimed to assess the pooled zinc utilisation, trends, and predictors among under-five children with diarrhoea in Ethiopia. This study used Ethiopian demographic and health survey (EDHS-2005–2016) data with... Читать дальше...
