Trump-backed Derek Merrin concedes to Democratic U.S. Rep. Marcy Kaptur in Ohio

Democratic U.S. Rep. Marcy Kaptur’s Trump-endorsed rival said he called the veteran Ohio congresswoman to concede defeat in the 2024 election. In a video posted Friday to X, formerly Twitter, state Rep. Derek Merrin did not rule out running for Kaptur’s seat again in two years, but he said his immediate plans were to rest and recharge with his family. Next-generation, nature-inspired sunscreens have a new molecular scaffold

A team of researchers led by professors Wybren Jan Buma at the University of Amsterdam and Vasilios Stavros at the University of Warwick (U.K.) have laid the groundwork for using urocanic acid and its derivatives as a novel class of sunscreen filters. Urocanic acid is a naturally occurring UV-A and UV-B absorbing compound found in the skin.

Nano-patterned copper oxide sensor provides rapid ultra-low hydrogen detection

Hydrogen is becoming an increasingly popular choice as we shift towards cleaner energy. It can be burned like traditional fuels, producing only water as a byproduct, and can generate electricity when used in fuel cells. However, as hydrogen production, use, and transportation increase, so do safety concerns. Hydrogen is highly flammable at concentrations as low as 4% and is odorless and colorless, making leaks challenging to detect.

A research team led by Dr. Du Xuemin from the Shenzhen Institutes of Advanced Technology (SIAT) of the Chinese Academy of Sciences has reported a living interface with unique functionalities of durable secretion of bioactive exosomes with tunable contents and miRNA cargoes, effectively promoting neurovascular remodeling.

Slavery, Compensation, and the Limits of Economics

A recent virtual reading group explored “what ifs” around the Reconstruction period. One avenue we explored was whether monetary compensation could have prevented the U.S. Civil War. The British compensated slaveholders in 1837 after the 1833 abolition of slavery. In 1862 the United States paid loyal slaveholders $300 per enslaved person freed as compensation for abolition in the District of Columbia. In both cases, slavery was abolished without bloodshed.
