Creating a Research-Ready Data Asset version of primary care data for Wales and investigating the impact of COVID-19 on utilisation of primary care services

by Hoda Abbasizanjani, Stuart Bedston, Ashley Akbari

Objectives

We developed an efficient Research-Ready Data Asset (RRDA) for the Welsh Longitudinal General Practice (WLGP) data within the Secure Anonymised Information Linkage Databank to standardise curation, enhance reproducibility, and facilitate research on primary care trends. Using this, we investigated primary care activity trends during and after the COVID-19 pandemic.

Methods

The RRDA involves cleaning, curation using GP-registration history... Читать дальше...

GV effects of diabetes mellitus on clinical outcomes of patients with acute heart failure: A systematic review and meta-analysis

by Linna Zhao, Juanjuan Zhang, Weizhe Liu, Cheng Dai, Aiying Li

Diabetes mellitus (DM) is identified as a potential modifier of clinical outcomes in acute heart failure (AHF), yet its prognostic impact is not fully determined. This systematic review and meta-analysis aimed to assess the prognostic impact of DM on survival outcomes in AHF patients by synthesizing evidence from 26 studies involving 326,928 subjects collected from Cochrane Library, PubMed, Web of Science, and Embase databases up to 1 June 2024. Drivers of fishermens’livelihood resilience and transitioning to ecological farming in Yangtze River,China:From PLS-SEM and fs/QCA

by Xueming Wang, Jianming Zheng, Tinggui Chen

This study investigates the effects of risk perception, buffering ability, self-organization ability and learning ability on the fishermens’ecological farming willingness in Yangtze River, China. Using the Yangtze River basin fishermen as a case study, this study simultaneously used the partial least squares structural equation model (PLS-SEM) and fuzzy-set qualitative comparative analysis (fs/QCA) to explore the linear and nonlinear dynamic impacts among the variables. Caste- and age-specific venom composition of biogenic amines and the influence of diet in honey bees

by Motoharu Hamano, Kazuya Niki, Keiki Imamura, Ken Sasaki

The chemical composition of the venom in social Hymenoptera differs between castes and ages. Biogenic amines are contained in the venom of honey bees and may be physiologically effective to vertebrate predators and insects. This study quantified the concentrations of biogenic amines in venom and compared them between different castes and ages of honey bees. The concentrations of dopamine and N-acetyldopamine in venom were significantly... Читать дальше...

Aberrant cohesin function in Saccharomyces cerevisiae activates Mcd1 degradation to promote cell lethality

by Gurvir Singh, Robert V. Skibbens

The cohesin complex is composed of core ring proteins (Smc1, Smc3 and Mcd1) and associated factors (Pds5, Scc3, and Rad61) that bind via Mcd1. Extrusion (looping from within a single DNA molecule) and cohesion (the tethering together of two different DNA molecules) underlie the many roles that cohesins play in chromosome segregation, gene transcription, DNA repair, chromosome condensation, replication fork progression, and genome organization. While cohesin... Читать дальше...

Modeling the interplay of sex hormones in cardiac hypertrophic signaling

by Adhithi Lakshmikanthan, Minnie Kay, Pim J.A. Oomen

Biological sex plays a crucial role in the outcomes of cardiac health and therapies. Sex hormones are known to strongly influence cardiac remodeling through intracellular signaling pathways, yet their underlying mechanisms remain unclear. To address this need, we developed and validated a logic-based systems biology model of cardiomyocyte hypertrophy that, for the first time, incorporates the effects of both estradiol (E2) and testosterone... Randomized Spatial PCA (RASP): A computationally efficient method for dimensionality reduction of high-resolution spatial transcriptomics data

by Ian K. Gingerich, Brittany A. Goods, H. Robert Frost

Spatial transcriptomics (ST) provides critical insights into the spatial organization of gene expression, enabling researchers to unravel the intricate relationship between cellular environments and biological function. Identifying spatial domains within tissues is key to understanding tissue architecture and mechanisms underlying development and disease progression. Here, we present Randomized Spatial PCA (RASP), a novel spatially-aware dimensionality reduction method for ST data.

Growthpoint officially opens Sandton Drive Link Bridge

JSE-listed real estate investment trust (Reit) Growthpoint has launched the new R26-million Sandton Drive Link Bridge as part of a larger effort to enhance safety, accessibility and walkability for pedestrians moving through the busy intersection. The bridge, which took 18 years to complete from its initial conception in 2007, spans 106 m and provides a direct pedestrian route over Sandton drive between Growthpoint’s The Place office building, at 1 Sandton drive, and the Sandton City shopping centre.
