Newport responds to inquiries about LGBTQ+ community's public restroom use

Newport's DEI statement asserts the city “condemns racism, discrimination and other types of bias.”

PORTLAND, Ore. (KOIN) — An Oregon beach town has underscored its diversity, equity and inclusion statement after responding to inquiries related to LGBTQ+ individuals’ use of public restrooms.

In a release issued on Monday, City of Newport Parks and Recreation Director Michael Cavanaugh said the department had been “fielding questions” concerning public restrooms and locker rooms being used by people with different gender identities.

In response, the director highlighted the DEI statement that asserts Newport “condemns racism, discrimination and other types of bias.”

Cavanaugh also noted the city must adhere to state laws on public accommodations and discrimination.

According to an Oregon statute, everyone within the jurisdiction of the state is entitled to full and equal accommodations regardless of race, sexual orientation, gender identity or other backgrounds.

“Public spaces are for everyone and the City works diligently to ensure they are inclusive, accessible, and safe,” Cavanaugh said. “Our city is diverse, vibrant, and flourishing because of the many people who that live and work here. The City of Newport and Newport Parks and Recreation will not tolerate discrimination, harassment, or violence toward any patrons or staff.”

He added that people can use the Newport Recreation and Aquatic Center’s gender-neutral restrooms if they aren’t comfortable using the facility’s multi-use restrooms or locker rooms. Each locker room holds private changing areas as well.

Additionally, officials advised the public to alert employees if they see individuals using the public space “for anything other than normal locker room use such as changing or showering.”
