Local student wins Congressional Art Competition

A Shaker High School student's art was selected as the winner of the 2024 Congressional Art Competition.

ALBANY, N.Y. (NEWS10)-- A Shaker High School student's art was selected as the winner of the 2024 Congressional Art Competition. “Crystalline Cobalt" drawn by Hans Gupta was picked to be hung in the U.S. Capitol this fall for the remainder of the year.

A panel of judges from Opalka Gallery at Russel Sage College chose Gupta's drawing of different crystal glasses and vases. He was one of 43 students who submitted art to the competition.

The artwork is planned to be hung this fall in the U.S. Capitol and honored at a reception in Washington D.C. The competition has honored high school students' artistic achievements since 1982 with more than 650,000 students participating.

Congressman Paul Tonko said the creativity and talent of participants in the competition is always inspiring. "Creative expression through the arts is an integral part of the learning process, allowing students to use their imaginations to bring forth their individual perspectives on the world around them," he said.
