Jess Elbaum is best known as the Department Head from Modern Family, The Conners, and the reboot of Magnum P.I.

Speaking to The U.S. Sun, she shared haircare advice for thinning locks.

She said genetics, stress, hormones, age, and possible underlying conditions could trigger hair loss.

Consulting with a physician can be beneficial for understanding the best course of treatment.

STYLE SAVIORS

Elbaum said hairstyles can’t entirely prevent hair loss but some can reduce the strain on your scalp, mitigating shedding to some extent.

She shared a selection of the best hairstyles to consider.

“Avoid tight hairstyles like tight ponytails, buns, or braids that pull on the hairline,” she said.

“Instead choose loose styles that don’t put too much tension on the hair follicles.

“If you prefer wearing your hair up, opt for low ponytails or buns instead of high ones. This reduces the tension on the scalp.

“Loose braids can distribute the weight of your hair more evenly and minimize pulling on individual strands.

“Soft, loose updos can be gentle on your hair compared to tight, sleek styles.”

Elbaum advised embracing natural textures rather than excessively using heat tools as this can “weaken” the hair shaft.

She said haircare products should include biotin, zinc, magnesium, and castor oil to stimulate growth.

“Tight headbands or hair accessories can cause friction and hair breakage,” she continued.

“Opt for softer, more flexible options.

“Protective styles like twists, braids, or buns can help minimize manipulation and protect your hair from environmental damage.”

“Regular trims can help maintain the health of your hair and prevent split ends, which can lead to further breakage,” she added.

STRANDS SOLUTIONS

Elbaum said diet alone may not reverse hair loss but it can potentially slow down the shedding and support overall hair health.

“Hair is primarily made of protein, so consuming an adequate amount of protein is essential for hair growth,” she said.

“Include lean proteins such as poultry, fish, eggs, legumes, nuts, and seeds in your diet.

“I love using and recommending HASK’s Biotin Boost and Tea Tree regimens to improve overall hair health and growth.

“Iron deficiency can contribute to hair loss, especially in women. Include iron-rich foods such as lean meats, spinach, kale, and lentils.

“Omega-3 fatty acids help nourish the hair follicles and promote hair growth.

“Sources like fatty fish like salmon, mackerel, sardines, flaxseeds, chia seeds, and walnuts.

“Ensure you are getting a balanced intake of fruits and vegetables.

“Limit processed foods and sugary snacks, focus on whole, nutrient-dense foods instead.”

The hairstylist said there is a selection of vitamins and minerals that can be beneficial to hair health, including vitamin A, vitamin E, vitamin D, zinc, and selenium.

“Biotin, also known as vitamin B7, is often recommended for promoting hair growth and strengthening hair,” she said.

“Good food sources of biotin include eggs, nuts, whole grains, and avocados.

“Drinking an adequate amount of water is crucial for overall health, including the health of your hair and scalp.

“Aim to drink 8 glasses of water a day.”

POWERFUL PRODUCTS

Elbaum said the time for hair loss to stop varies depending on the cause of shedding and the treatment chosen.

Healthy hair grows a half inch each month.

“I have great relationships with my clients, and nothing makes me feel better than to encourage them on their individual journeys, seeing them make progress and seeing them happy and overjoyed with their hair and achieving their goals,” she said.

“I love using HASK hair care in my shower and on my clients to treat and style their hair.
