Micky van de Ven has had a brilliant first season with Tottenham Hotspur, but while Gary Lineker has heaped praise on the young defender, Alan Shearer thinks it is ‘too soon’ to tell whether he will be as good as many have tipped.

Signed from Wolfsburg last summer, van de Ven immediately became the ideal partner for Cristian Romero at the heart of the Tottenham defence.

With his electric pace and composure on the ball, van de Ven has provided stability and a calming influence on his teammate, and the pair have arguably been two of Tottenham’s best players this season under Ange Postecoglou.

Van de Ven has made 25 appearances in the league this season, scoring three rather important goals (Transfermarkt), including the winner against Luton Town earlier in the campaign. His latest, a cool finish in the final stages of the game against Burnley this weekend, again proved to be the decisive goal.

Is Micky van de Ven worthy of the hype?

On The Rest is Football podcast, Gary Lineker hyped up van de Ven, saying: “I like him. Alan is not so sure, we’ve had a bit of a debate. He suffered a bit because he did his hamstring and then he had another tweak and he made a couple of mistakes, particularly against Newcastle. I think he is going to be very good and he’s still young.”

Shearer added: “I just think to say how brilliant he is, it might be a little bit too soon. There is undoubted ability there. But I think there are certainly bigger tests that will come his way, but he has had a very good start. He looks to be a good signing but I wouldn’t go overboard just yet.”

Spurs Web Opinion

Obviously, it’s only Micky’s first season in England, but the way he has adapted and looked so comfortable in this league, especially in this high-intensity system, certainly bodes well for the future. He’s been outstanding this year, and should only get better.
