The northern facing explosion sent ash and debris across the Pacific Northwest after scientists kept a watchful eye on the Cascade peak for months. The eruption killed 57 people as ash blanketed nearly 11 states.

Saturday, May 18, 2024 marks 44 years since the southern Washington peak came to life in its biggest eruption to date.
