‘I can’t put myself through it!’ rage Corrie fans who slate soap for stream of ‘grim’ storylines amid raitings crisis

CORONATION Street fans have slammed the soap’s “grim and depressing” storylines.

Since launching in 1960, the soap has tackled countless characters, storylines and themes in its long history.

However, some aren’t happy with the current state of affairs.

Writing online, a commenter shared: “I can’t recall the last time any of the zillion characters were happy or something positive occurred.

“I just cannot bear to put myself through an entire episode any longer, it’s nothing but an insultingly-written, woefully-acted, torturous, relentless misery-fest.

“I am surely not the only one who feels this way about this now ghost of a soap that goes under the moniker of ‘Coronation Street‘?

Meanwhile, the unhappy former viewer described the “negativity and morbidity” surrounding the soap as “frighteningly off the charts.”

Another person took aim at the show’s ability to maintain an emotional impact.

They wrote: “I don’t even think it’s the show being grim, so much as the show not being able to commit to the emotional weight storylines are meant to have.

“In fact, I actually feel like it needs to be more grim at times to properly carry the topics they showcase.

“Paul’s MND is a perfect example. This storyline is meant to depict the slow decline of an individual as they lose themselves, and on a wider scale the hole that will leave for the family.

“So what’s the show’s decision: give Bernie another son and Gemma another brother. One we never heard about and one they never hinted at for years.

“So then Paul’s loss is completely lessened.”

They also highlighted a grim plot which saw Toyah Battersby revealed to have had a secret baby after being raped in 2001, saying the revelation “doesn’t make sense in the slightest”.

The storyline revealed how the child was stillborn and buried on The Red Rec after the sex attack by Phil Simmonds.

Another person added: “Nearly every episode has a warning before it that it may contain upsetting scenes. I can’t remember Corrie having to do this so regularly.”

At present, the disappearance of Lauren Bolton (Cait Fitton) is one of the show’s biggest storylines.

Lauren vanished in February and there’s been no trace of her since.

Although viewers saw a mystery person enter Lauren’s home, they weren’t shown their identity.

Lauren’s employer, beloved Weatherfield resident Roy Cropper (David Neilson) was arrested and charged with her supposed murder – although Roy’s friends and loved ones are fighting for his release.

The ongoing storyline has been linked back to a separate harrowing plot from years ago.

Back in 2017, viewers watched as Bethany Platt (Lucy Fallon) was targeted, groomed and abused by evil Nathan Curtis (Christopher Harper) and his gang.

Nathan and his friends were ultimately sentenced for their crimes in late 2017.

Having originally left in 2020, Bethany made a return to the soap at the end of 2023.

Meanwhile, sick villain Nathan has also just returned, having been released from prison.

Realising he’d been released, Bethany bravely approached Nathan and accused him of being responsible for Lauren’s disappearance.

Not long after, the vile abuser found himself brutally attacked by a hooded assailant.

Coronation Street airs on ITV and is available on ITVX
