My concrete balcony was transformed by an Ikea find – I mixed it up to save money, they’re still holding up years later
A DIY fan has given their balcony a glow-up using a purchase from Ikea.
They said the home renovation project completely transformed their outdoor space.
Redditor Karma78 shared a post about the job to the social media platform.
“Balcony makeover with Runnen tiles,” they said in the thread, dedicated to all things Ikea.
They included photographs of their “original concrete balcony.”
The difference between the two was stark, making the space appear significantly more comfortable.
WHAT DID THEY DO?
They specified that applying the Runnen tiles was completely renter friendly.
“That’s so cool,” another Redditor said. “Is this in an apartment complex?”
“Yes it’s in an apartment complex therefore everything has to be as damage-free as possible,” the original poster replied.
WHAT’S THE CATCH?
They shared an update years later on the state of the tiles.
“I’ve since moved to a new place without a balcony and ended up giving those tiles to a friend,” they said.
“They’re still holding up well, but my friend encountered a new issue.
“The plastic tiles become extremely hot during the summer when exposed to direct sunlight, especially the afternoon sun.
“They actually get so hot that walking on them barefoot becomes hazardous for children and pets.”
They added that overheated tiles were never an issue for them personally, due to location.
“I never experienced this issue while owning them because my balcony was somewhat sheltered, as you can see in my original post.
“That being said, I’m uncertain about the longevity of the plastic tiles under these conditions.
“If your balcony receives direct sunlight, you might want to consider opting for the wooden tiles.
“They’re pricier but offer better resistance to heat.”
