In a frantic search after the collision, the bodies of a man and a woman were found by police late on Saturday evening.

Five others are still missing as firefighters and police officers search along the river using drones and motorboats.

Soma Csécsi, spokesperson of the Budapest Police Headquarters (BRFK), said the police were informed of the catastrophe after receiving a report that a man was found with blood pouring from his head.

A hotel boat was later found with a damaged hull more than 50 miles along the Danube.

The 358ft mega boat can hold up to 110 people on board as police confirmed no one on board was injured.

Investigations are ongoing into the fatal collision but the BRFK have reportedly opened up criminal proceedings against an unknown suspect.

They say a person has been detained due to suspicion of endangering water transport leading to the tragic deaths.
