'Ridiculous': Legal experts accuse Judge Cannon of 'unnecessary editorializing' in filing

The judge overseeing Donald Trump's criminal case over classified document retention is catching some heat for her latest court filing.

Earlier on Sunday, Judge Aileen Cannon issued a ruling in which she stated she was "disappointed" in the conduct of Special Counsel Jack Smith, who brought the case against Trump. The filing itself is an order directing the public docketing of "outstanding undocketed pre-trial motions."

Legal experts were quick to pounce on the new attack line.

Political and legal commentator Allison Gill, better known as "Mueller, She Wrote," said that "Judge Cannon approved Jack Smith's redactions but is 'very disappointed' in him for asking for them."

"She also DENIED Trump's proposed redactions but is granting him a merits hearing on them in another motion. This is f------ ridiculous," the expert added.

A former CIA agent who published a piece criticizing Cannon's progress in the case also chimed in:

"I apologize for accusing Judge Cannon of not making progress. She's been working hard over the weekend in order to [checks notes]...overturn agreed-upon redactions to Ex. 18 of a motion that was filed 3 months ago. It's been worth the wait, Aileen. Keep your eyes on the prize!"

Former federal prosecutor Joyce Vance said the judge "has repeatedly criticized, federal prosecutors, while giving Trump's lawyers a pass for things like misleading the court about a conflict in dates with another court, despite moving to reschedule the date in the other court."

National security attorney Bradley Moss said Cannon is riding a line.

"Again, Cannon engages in unnecessary editorializing but within her discretion," the lawyer said. "On the merits, she largely rejected Trump’s proposed redactions as lacking any basis. We’ll finally see the two remaining pre-trial motions that have been sitting for months without resolution by Cannon."
