In a report, the World Food Programme identified conflicts as the main driver of severe hunger crises worldwide, emphasizing that 309 million people will face acute food insecurity in 2024.

On Sunday, May 19, the organisation stated that 60% of hungry people live in conflict-affected areas.

The World Food Programme has attributed climate change, conflicts, inequality, poverty, and the repercussions of the COVID-19 pandemic as factors contributing to the increase in hunger globally.

According to the organization’s report, 42 million people in 45 countries worldwide are in a “crisis or worse” food situation.

The World Food Programme did not specifically address the situation in Afghanistan in this report; however, its previous data indicates that from November 2023 to March of the current year, 15.8 million people in the country were severely food insecure.

According to the organization’s report, 3.6 million tons were in the “emergency phase,” an additional 23.7 million tons required humanitarian assistance in the current year.

The recent flash floods in the country have worsened the dire situation and strained the limited resources available. The impact of these floods adds further pressure to the nation’s infrastructure and response capabilities.
