Following the announcement of the death of Ebrahim Raisi, the president of Iran, in an aviation accident, the Iranian media have reported that the first Vice President, Mohammad Mokhber Dezfuli, will assume the presidential responsibilities until elections are held.
Currently, Mohammad Mokhber is the First Vice President of Iran.
The spokesperson for the Guardian Council stated, “Based on the constitution, with the Leader’s approval, the First Vice President will assume the responsibilities and powers of the President.”
According to him, a council composed of the Chief Justice, the Speaker of Parliament, and the First Vice President must make arrangements to ensure that a new president is elected within a maximum of 50 days.
The President of Iran and his companions died yesterday, Sunday, May 19, following the crash of their helicopter in East Azerbaijan.
The incident was reported yesterday, and this morning the wreckage of the helicopter and its passengers were found.
Hossein Amir-Abdollahian, Iran’s Foreign Minister, Al-Hashem, Khamenei’s representative and the Imam of Tabriz, Malek Rahmati, the Governor of East Azerbaijan, Seyed Mehdi Mousavi, and the commander of the President’s protection unit were among Raisi’s companions in the accident.
All passengers on board the helicopter have died. The cause of the accident is still unknown.
