White Sox 2, Tigers 11: There goes a series win
Jonathan Cannon gets shelled; South Siders lose big
Well, so much for a series win on the road. The Chicago White Sox were blown out this afternoon, 11-2, in the finale of this three-game set against the Detroit Tigers.
Jonathan Cannon was on the mound against Reese Olson, and after a terrific outing against the Houston Astros, Cannon had the exact opposite results. Cannon was attacked early, as Matt Vierling tripled to start the game followed by a Colt Keith home run to make it 2-0 before an out was recorded. Then with two outs, the Tigers added on three more on a ground out and Akil Baddoo home run.
The bottom of the second was no different, as Jake Rogers and Vierling led off the inning with back-to-back singles, and Keith had another RBI on a single to make it 6-0. Cannon was replaced by Jared Shuster and got the hook with a final line of one-plus innings, seven hits, five earned runs, one strikeout, and two home runs.
Shuster put out the fire with gasoline, as Riley Greene immediately hit a three-run home run to extend the lead to 9-0.
From there, things settled down until the top of the seventh inning, when Eloy Jiménez singled and Gavin Sheets doubled. With two outs, Nicky Lopez had a two-run single.
Earlier in the game Lopez also had a cool catch, but that’s about it on the highlights from today.

Not quite sure what the team is doing rushing Jiménez back, but it doesn’t seem to be working for him. On the other hand, it’s hard to define “rushing” Eloy back when he is hurt close to 100% he’s on the field.
The Tigers added two more on a Zack McKinstry home run and a double by Wenceel Pérez, and then this one was ova.
At 21-58, the White Sox are speeding toward 60 losses and were not even at the end of June yet. It’s truly astonishing stuff to watch. But look on the bright side, at least we got through the game today without any embarrassing and head-scratching plays being posted by every single sports news outlet.
I have a feeling those 60 losses will come sooner rather than later, because the Los Angeles Dodgers and Shohei Ohtani will be at Guaranteed Rate Field tomorrow night to start a three-game series. Garrett Crochet will be on the mound to start the series, which is a plus, but there’s not much to say other than that.
