California needs a million EV charging stations — but that’s ‘unlikely’ and ‘unrealistic’

California will have to build public charging stations at an unprecedented pace to meet the needs of 7 million electric cars expected on its roads in less than seven years. State projections show a million public chargers are needed by the end of 2030. That's almost 10 times more than the number available to drivers in December. Obstacles to hitting that goal include costs, permitting processes and the need for power grid upgrades. Many experts and lawmakers fear that the state won’t be prepared. Stanford professor Bruce Cain called the goal unrealistic. Patty Monahan is on the state agency responsible for the ramp-up and she says she's confident the chargers can be built in time.
