Boy, 12, wounded in accidental shooting inside Kenwood home

An 18-year-old relative was allegedly responsible for apparently accidentally shooting a 12-year-old boy Monday night in a Kenwood neighborhood home, police said.

Just after 10 p.m., the boy was in his bedroom in the 4500 block of South Drexel Boulevard when an 18-year-old relative started "playing with a gun that had a switch on it," according to police reports.

One of several relatives who were witnesses told police before he aimed the gun at the boy, the 18-year-old said "aloud" the gun was "empty," a report said.

The boy's father and mother were in another room when they heard "a loud bang" and found the 12-year-old wounded.

They boy suffered possibly several gunshot wounds, including to his chest, police said. He was taken to Comer Children's Hospital in critical condition but the condition later stabilized.

The 18-year-old relative ran away out a back door of the home, the report said.

There is no one in custody and Area One detectives are investigating.
