Jazmin Mejia went straight from high school to what she thought was the perfect fit at Loyola University Chicago, a 30-minute drive from the neighborhood where she grew up.

But Mejia was quickly overwhelmed at the North Side campus of nearly 17,000 students.

“The classes were too big,” says Mejia, 18. “I was struggling to ask for help.”

Woman found shot to death inside North Lawndale home

A woman was found dead Thursday inside a North Lawndale home.

About 3 p.m., officers conducted a well-being check at the home in the 1400 block of South St. Louis Avenue and found the 27-year-old on the floor of the kitchen with gunshot wounds to her body, Chicago police said.

The woman was pronounced dead at the scene, police said.

A person was hospitalized in a crash on the Kennedy Expressway on Thursday night.

Two vehicles were traveling around 8:20 p.m. on the northbound lanes on I-90 when one vehicle crashed into another near North Avenue, Illinois State Police said.

Four hospitalized in five-vehicle crash in Palatine

A five-vehicle pileup in Palatine sent four people to hospitals with non-life-threatening injuries Thursday, police said.

The crash occurred about 10:52 a.m. along North Rand Road between East Dundee Road and Winslowe Drive, according to police.

Among the injured were a 20-year-old man and a 22-year-old man who were in a Honda CRV and two women, ages 53 and 59, who were in a GMC Tahoe.
