Book Review: A retired small-town cop searches for missing girls in William Kent Krueger’s mystery

William Kent Krueger returns to his favorite themes, the mistreatment of Native Americans and the rape of the natural world for profit, in his new mystery, “Spirit Crossing.” This time, retired police chief Cork O’Connor, whose family includes members of the Ojibwe tribe, investigates the murders of several young girls. FBI and state law enforcement agencies descend, but when the body ends up being that of a Native American girl, they lose interest. Eventually, suspicion falls on workers building an oil pipeline across sacred ground. Associated Press Reviewer Bruce DeSilva says the prose and character development are superb and vivid descriptions bring Minnesota’s north woods to life.
