A 10-month-old Palestinian baby suddenly stopped crawling. Polio had struck Gaza
Ten-month-old Abdel-Rahman Abuel-Jedian is the first confirmed case of polio in Gaza and he's now paralyzed in the leg. Like many Palestinians in Gaza, his family is sheltering in a crowded tent camp surrounded by pools of dirty water and piles of sewage. He was never vaccinated because he was born right before the Oct. 7 Hamas attack on Israel that kicked off the war and prompted Israel to launch a retaliatory offensive on the strip that sent his family fleeing almost immediately. The diagnosis has confirmed many health care workers' worst fears and prompted a U.N. vaccination campaign, beginning this weekend.
