Bears look to add 3 players to practice squad, including new long snapper Scott Daly

The Bears will continue trying to develop undrafted rookie quarterback Austin Reed, as well as many other popular characters from “Hard Knocks.” They filled 14 of 16 spots on the practice squad Wednesday with players who were with them in training camp.

There will be some shuffling, however. The Bears intend to add long snapper Scott Daly (Lions), wide receiver Samori Toure (Packers) and defensive tackle Sam Roberts (Patriots), a source said, so they need to clear one additional spot.

Daly, from Downers Grove, is a key pickup while Patrick Scales is out. Scales is on injured reserve with a back injury and hopes to return by the end of October, a source said. The Bears obviously would plan to elevate him from the practice squad or sign him to the active roster before the Titans game.

Daly, 30, played at Downers Grove South and Notre Dame, then went undrafted in 2017. The Bears gave him a tryout at rookie minicamp that year, but didn’t sign him. He finally secured a job with the Lions in 2021 and spent the last three seasons with them.

Toure, 26, was a seventh-round pick out of Nebraska in 2022 and played 22 games for the Packers in two seasons. He caught 13 passes for 160 yards and a touchdown.

Roberts, 26, was with New England the last two seasons and played 12 games, including one start. He appears to be a contingency plan in case Pickens misses games.

Teams can use a 17th spot for an international player, but that doesn’t apply to Canadian offensive lineman Theo Benedet. Canada is the only country that doesn’t count as part of the NFL’s International Player Pathway Program.
