Woman charged with shooting man on Red Line train on North Side
A woman is facing attempted murder charges for allegedly shooting a man during an argument on a CTA Red Line train Wednesday on the North Side.
Indya Smith, 23, was arrested Wednesday morning — minutes after she shot a 33-year-old man who was traveling on a northbound Red Line train between the Bryn Mawr and Thorndale stations, Chicago police said.
Before opening fire, Smith allegedly spat on the man and the two began arguing around 8:40 a.m., police said. She then pulled out a handgun and shot him in his left shoulder, they said.
The man was taken in fair condition to St. Francis Hospital in Evanston.
Smith was arrested shortly after the shooting in the 5800 block of North Broadway by Loyola University police officers and Chicago police officers.
She is facing one count each of attempted first-degree murder, aggravated battery and aggravated unlawful use of a weapon. She was also cited for carrying a weapon on a CTA train, police said.
She is scheduled to appear at a detention hearing Friday.
