At least 38 killed as gunmen open fire on vehicles carrying Shiites in northwest Pakistan
Pakistani police say gunmen have opened fire on vehicles carrying Shiite Muslims in the country's restive northwest, killing at least 38 people and wounding 20 others. Thursday's attack happened in Kurram, a district in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province where clashes between majority Sunni Muslims and minority Shiites have killed dozens in recent months. A police official said the vehicles were traveling in a convoy from Parachinar to Peshawar when gunmen opened fire. No one immediately claimed responsibility. Shiite Muslims make up about 15% of the 240 million population of Sunni-majority Pakistan.
