From Bach to Beyonce, why a church orchestra aims to lift up young musicians of color

The Black pastor of a multiethnic congregation in Anaheim, California, has started a string orchestra for young musicians of color. The Rev. Chineta Goodjoin says she started this group, which will play secular and sacred music, as part of the congregation's social justice and equity ministry for children who are underrepresented in orchestras in largely affluent Orange County. The orchestra will not require auditions and is free of cost. Students will receive guidance from young adult mentors of color. Goodjoin believes it is important for children to see themselves represented in teachers and mentors. Promoting equity in classical music fits into her vision for a church that lifts up the marginalized.
