Ghana rights group files lawsuit against government's acceptance of US deportees

A rights group in Ghana has filed a lawsuit against the government seeking to block its arrangement with Washington to accept West Africans deported from the United States. A lawyer for the group says a group of 14 people became the latest group of West Africans deported from the U.S. to Ghana earlier this week. Oliver Barker-Vormawor says that brings the overall total to 42 deportees accepted by Ghana. His group argues that the agreement with Washington is unconstitutional because it wasn’t approved by the Ghanaian parliament and may violate conventions that forbid sending people to countries where they could face persecution. Government spokesman Felix Kwakye Ofosu said the government will defend the arrangement in court.
