Judge: Turkish student who criticized Israel can resume research at Tufts after visa revocation

A federal judge has allowed a Tufts University student from Turkey to resume research and teaching while she challenges her arrest and detention by the Trump administration. Rümeysa Öztürk, a PhD student, was detained for six weeks in Louisiana after coauthoring an op-ed criticizing her university’s response to Israel and the war in Gaza. Her arrest in March was part of a wave of immigration enforcement targeting foreign-born students involved in pro-Palestinian advocacy. Chief U.S. District Judge Denise J. Casper in Boston ruled Monday that the termination of her student record was likely “arbitrary and capricious.” Öztürk plans to graduate next year.
