These numbers tell the story of the Los Angeles wildfires, one year later
A year after twin infernos devastated Los Angeles County, here are some key numbers that show how fast the disaster unfolded and the toll it left behind. On Jan 6, 2024, the weather was primed for severe wildfire danger, with wind gusts reaching 90 miles per hour. The Palisades Fire exploded in size within four hours, leading to evacuations. Meanwhile, the Eaton Fire started on the other side of the county. In total, 31 lives were lost in the fires, and 16,255 structures were destroyed. Only eight homes have been rebuilt so far. The fires burned 59 square miles, roughly the size of the entire city of San Francisco.
