CPD officer fires shots in Austin during traffic stop, one arrested

A suspect was in custody after a Chicago police officer fired shots during a traffic stop early Monday in Austin on the West Side.

Around 12:40 a.m., uniformed Harrison District officers were on patrol in the 4700 block of West 5th Avenue when they conducted a traffic stop and found a gun on the suspect's lap, police said.

During the encounter, an officer fired shots but no one was hi5, officials said.

The male suspect was treated on the scene for minor lacerations caused by broken glass, authorities said. He was taken into custody and the firearm was recovered.

Two officers were hospitalized for observation.

The shooting was being investigated by the Civilian Office of Police Accountability with the full cooperation of the Chicago Police Department, officials said.

The officers involved will be placed on routine administrative duties for at least 30 days.
