Vlhova cleared to race, eyes Olympic slalom title defence

The 30-year-old Slovak tore a knee ligament during a World Cup giant slalom in January 2024 and the injury took a long time to heal because of subsequent cartilage problems and further surgeries.

"I have just completed a medical check-up and based on the results, my medical team and physiotherapists have cleared me for full skiing intensity," a visibly elated Vlhova said in an Instagram post, hailing the "wonderful news".

"Given the current situation, it might sound a bit crazy, but despite how little time is left until the Olympics, I have decided to fight for the chance to compete," she added.

The Olympic women's slalom is scheduled to take place in Cortina d'Ampezzo on February 18.

"I'll be training hard, taking it day by day, and closely monitoring how my knee responds to the load," said Vlhova.

She won Olympic slalom gold at Beijing 2022, and has also claimed six medals from world championships, including a giant slalom title from Are in 2019.

"With respect to my body, I will make the final decision about competing 48 hours before the slalom race," Vlhova added.

While recovering from her injury, Vlhova parted ways with Italian coach Mauro Pini last March.
