US futures and Asian shares slip after a wild day on Wall St ends with a whimper
Shares are mostly lower in Asia after a day of dramatic swings on Wall Street that included Microsoft's worst drop in nearly six years. Oil prices fell more than $1 and the prices of gold and silver weakened. The president of Indonesia's stock exchange resigned after share prices tumbled due to concerns over market risks. On Thursday, the S&P 500 edged 0.1% lower after flirting with a record high in the morning and falling by as much as 1.5% later in the day. The Dow industrials added 0.1%, and the Nasdaq composite fell 0.7%. Microsoft tumbled following its profit report, but a big gain for Meta Platforms almost offset that decline.
