Lawmakers struggle to make headway on Homeland Security funding

Lawmakers appear far from ending a funding lapse at the Department of Homeland Security. President Donald Trump's nominee to run the department, Sen. Markwayne Mullin, has pleaded with colleagues to resolve the impasse. But there was little sign of a breakthrough. House Democrats are instead launching a long shot effort to fund certain agencies except those focused on immigration enforcement. Transportation Security Administration officials are warning that delays at some airports could get worse as more screeners working without pay call out or, in some cases, quit. The shutdown of Homeland Security has lasted 33 days.
