Spanish woman, 25, dies by legal euthanasia in case that drew national spotlight

A young Spanish woman died in Barcelona after winning a long court fight for her euthanasia right. On Thursday, Noelia Castillo received life-ending medicine after Spain's high court denied her family's appeal. She was 25. In 2024, a Catalan review panel approved her application and deemed her suffering severe and incurable. Her father challenged the decision and said mental illness rendered her unfit to make the decision. Various levels of courts rejected the appeal, including Spain’s Supreme Court in January. A European rights court also turned the case away in March. In a TV interview on Wednesday, Castillo said she wanted peace and felt misunderstood.
