Hamas considers a proposal to disarm in Gaza that's central to the territory's future
Hamas is weighing a new proposal to give up its weapons in Gaza, a major concession that would clear the way for the U.S. plan for rebuilding the war-ravaged territory. It affects next steps in the Gaza ceasefire that has been in place for nearly six months. The director of the U.S.-backed Board of Peace says the proposal calls for the “complete decommissioning” of Hamas weapons and putting Gaza's security under the control of a new technocratic committee. Disarmament would begin with the “most dangerous weapons" and be accompanied by staged Israeli withdrawals. But Hamas’ founding charter calls for armed resistance against Israel.
