About the project

Identity is not a definition set in stone. It is an evolving construct, a social persona made of our circumstances, our relationships, our experiences… What we choose to show the world and what the world wants to see in us.

Fashion and beauty norms have always been markers of identity throughout the years, testimony of gender, origin, social class… But fashion has also been evolving constantly, underlining breaks, sometimes revolutions in history. Some of today’s very gendered make-up trends or pieces of clothing had a completely different social signification yesterday.

Inspired by the evolution of costume, we tried to explore the common perceptions of identity and gender norms by playing around with these codes and nuances.
