Confederate declaration of 1860: The argument for states' rights

In the heated debate over the meaning behind the controversial Confederate Flag, supporters of the battle flag often say that the argument over slavery is not the reason South Carolina joined in on the effort to secede from the Union, but that it was States rights that so many men fought and died for.
