Calls from unknown numbers: Kazakhstan prepares major change

Tengrinews.kz — Kazakhstan is preparing to introduce mandatory caller identification for calls from legal entities. When such a call comes in, the company’s name will appear on the phone screen even if the number is not saved in the user’s contacts, First Vice Minister of Artificial Intelligence and Digital Development Rostislav Konyashkin said.
It was previously reported that the official call identification system was expected to launch in August. Konyashkin was asked when exactly it would be introduced and whether all mobile operators would join the system at the same time.

“Yes, under the recently adopted laws, we have introduced mandatory caller identification for businesses. We believe this will significantly reduce the risks of cyber fraud and fraudulent activity. In other words, when you receive a call from a legal entity, its name will immediately appear on your screen, even if the number is not saved in your contacts,” Konyashkin said.

According to the vice minister, the necessary technical work is currently underway to launch the system.
However, Konyashkin was unable to give an exact date for when caller identification would become operational. He noted that the matter would need to be clarified with the Telecommunications Committee and the ministry’s press service.
The system is intended to help Kazakhstanis distinguish calls from legitimate companies and organisations from potentially fraudulent ones.
Earlier, the Interior Ministry warned Kazakhstanis about a new online fraud scheme. According to the ministry, scammers are increasingly using artificial intelligence to create deepfakes featuring well-known people in order to persuade citizens to invest money in supposedly profitable investment projects.
