Kazakhstani woman unexpectedly found herself married twice

Tengrinews.kz — A Kazakhstani woman has discovered she was mistakenly registered as being married twice. She learned of the error at a bank while attempting to complete a real estate transaction.
What happened
The woman took to social media to complain about the registry office error. According to her, the blunder caused the scheduled property deal to fall through.

"There are two registrations from the same date and year, but while one has the correct last names, the second document contains errors," she wrote.

As a result, the woman was technically "married twice" to the same person.
She added that her eGov account did not show the second marriage status. However, the couple had noticed the typos in their surnames previously but were unable to correct them on their own.
Response from the "Government for Citizens"
The press service of the "Government for Citizens" State Corporation stated that they investigated the civil registry's information system following the woman's post. The audit revealed that one entry was a native electronic record, while the second was a duplicate created during the digitization process.

"Between 2013 and 2017, the Ministry of Justice digitized archived records from 1937 to 2008 by scanning them and entering the data into the information system. During the population and testing of the system, this specific record was inadvertently duplicated," the state corporation explained.

Thus, the dual marriage records were caused by "technicalities during the transition from paper to electronic records and do not reflect two actually registered marriages."
To "divorce" the duplicate entry, a formal request was sent to the Almaty Department of Justice on September 8 to delete the redundant record.
The "Government for Citizens" also noted that the responsibility for marriage registration was only transferred to them on July 1, 2023.
