CHED orders colleges, universities to retain Filipino units

The Commission on Higher Education (CHED) mandated all public and private higher education institutions (HEIs) to retain six to nine units of Filipino subjects in their general curriculum. In a memorandum signed by CHED Chairperson Patricia Licuanan dated Monday, July 18, HEIs were ordered to implement two CHED memorandums issued in 1996 and 1997, requiring the inclusion of Filipino subjects in the general curriculum. CMO 59, series of 1996 sets the minimum requirement of Filipino in the fields of Humanities, Social Sciences, and Communication to nine units, while CMO No. 4, series of 1997 requires at least six units of Filipino for non-Humanities fields. “All concerned are hereby enjoined to comply and implement the above requirement of CMO No. 59 s.1996 and CMO No. 4 s. 1997 provision during the pendency of the Supreme Court TRO,” the memorandum reads.
