Plumes of thick black smoke alarm residents of Aktobe
Tengrinews.kz — A fire has broken out at a new landfill in Aktobe, covering an area of nearly 300 square meters.
The news was reported on Tuesday evening, September 2, by the Diapazon newspaper via social media.
According to the publication, residents of Aktobe noticed plumes of black smoke rising from the landfill site.
"What is that fire again? Black smoke is clearly visible, and we can hear emergency services heading there to put it out. The landfill is burning again...
We live in the Altyn Orda district, and the black smoke is heading right toward us," local residents said.
The Aktobe city administration confirmed that the municipal solid waste landfill is on fire.
"The fire broke out on two of the 18 cells in the new section of the landfill. The fire was prevented from spreading to the remaining cells. This was possible because soil cover had previously been applied to 16 cells specifically to prevent the spread of fire," the administration explained.
It is reported that representatives from the Department of Emergency Situations and local executive bodies are currently using specialized equipment to cover the fire pockets with soil. These efforts are aimed at preventing the fire from flaring up again and reducing smoke levels.
The firefighting operation involves 10 fire crews, 10 fire engines, 15 water tankers, as well as 20 dump trucks, 7 loaders, an excavator, and 2 bulldozers.
Additionally, more equipment is being dispatched to the scene.
