Kazakhstan uncovers series of major thefts from transit freight trains

Tengrinews.kz — Officers from the Transport Police Department have uncovered a series of thefts involving expensive electronics from transit freight containers passing through Kazakhstan on their way to Western Europe. Temirzhan Ramazanov, First Deputy Head of the Transport Police Department, provided the details, according to the department’s press service.
According to him, operational-search activities led to the identification and detention of four residents of Abai Region who, investigators say, acted in collusion, repeatedly broke into freight train containers and stole laptops and gaming consoles.

“In particular, in May last year, 1,019 laptops were stolen from a container traveling from China to Poland at Torpaldy station in Zhetysu Region. Some of the stolen equipment was later sold in Almaty. The theft caused total financial damage of 632.9 million tenge to the companies that owned the cargo,” the deputy head of the Transport Police Department said.

During the pre-trial investigation, transport police carried out the necessary investigative measures, including recovering some of the stolen equipment. The defendants’ guilt was fully proven.

“The Alakol District Court in Zhetysu Region found all four defendants guilty of theft on an especially large scale. They were sentenced to prison terms of up to six years and seven months,” the police colonel said.
